Science, The Mind, and Happiness

The Mind & Life Institute is a non-profit organization that works to build a scientific understanding of how to cultivate a mind of compassion and wisdom. And we could all use a little more of that!

The following video is narrated by Richard Gere and is an introduction to the work of the Mind & Life Institute. It explores how we can create a healthy body and a happy mind through the practice of meditation and how science is now confirming the positive changes that contemplative practices can make in our lives.

You can learn more about The Mind & Life Institute here.

Wishing you all a mind filled with compassion and wisdom!

The Amazing Aimee Mullins…

Aimee Mullins is an American athlete, actress, and fashion model best known for her collegiate-level athletic accomplishments, despite a medical condition that resulted in the amputation of both of her legs. You can read more about her here.

The following is a quote from her presentation at a recent TED (Technology, Entertainment & Design) Conference: ”Everyone has something rare and powerful to offer our society.”

Her presentation focusses on how we can all either uplift or hinder the power of our children through language and the way we perceive and relate to their apparent “disabilities”. In her experience, adversity has been an opportunity to discover her personal power and the challenge of having a disability has been a gift that has allowed her to live her life more fully. Truly inspiring…

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink…

We don’t often worry about access to clean water in the US. We have the amazing good fortune to live in a country where water sanitation is just assumed. And rightly so.

But as we know, not everyone in the world is so lucky. Even knowing this, it is still startling to read the actual statistics here.

But it is not all bad news. The folks at water.org are making good happen every day to address this tragic global issue. You can check out their amazing initiatives here.

Story of the Day

Sunrise photo by Jon Sullivan

I wanted to share a moving story from this website.

Enjoy!

Stories have great power to heal, as well as to entertain. This story, called “The Two Warriors,” by Dan Keding, has been a favorite among the Irish audience who are working to heal the rift in their country, but it speaks to human beings everywhere.

Once there was a war and two armies came together in battle. They fought from the time the sun came up in the east til it set in the west. When the day was at a close, only two warriors remained, surrounded by their dead comrades covered in the blood and gore of war.

They stood facing each other, so exhausted from death that they could barely move. Finally one said, “Let us rest until dawn and then finish this fight and only one will go home.” The other warrior agreed.

And so they took off their dented helmets and unstrapped their shields and sheathed their swords. They lay down among their fallen comrades only a few feet apart from each other. But they were so weary that they could not sleep. It was the weariness that comes with too much killing. Finally one turned to the other and spoke.

“I have a son at home in my village and he plays with a wooden sword. Someday he wants to grow up and be like me.”

The other man listened and finally replied, “I have a daughter at home and when I look into her eyes I see the youth of my wife.”

The two men started to tell each other stories. Stories of their families, their villages, their neighbors, the old stories that they learned at their grandparents’ knees when they were young. All night long they told stories til the sun started to creep to life in the east.

Slowly they stood and put on their helmets. They buckled on their shields and drew their swords. They looked deep into each others’ eyes and slowly sheathed their swords and walked away, each to his own home.

Grandmother always said you cannot hate someone when you know their story.
