Good Food Happens.

In his workshop, “Artful Eating,” Orange County Museum of Art‘s very own Jeff Venier, M.F.A. leads the group in a drawing exercise based on the techniques of the old masters.  This art class, though technical, is also designed to be a means of practicing mindfulness.  Appreciating the beauty of our food leads to a richer, and more mindful eating experience, and can give us time to think about where our food comes from, what form it takes.  Before sitting down to draw, Jeff leads the group in touring the Irvine Farmer’s Market to gather the ingredients for their still life (and their lunch!).

Jeff’s workshops always feature exciting new recipes, sure to broaden your knowledge of delicious ingredients.  Past recipes have included:  Black and Brown sweet rice salad with Eggplant and Tomatoes with Pecorino, and Beet and Carrot Asian remoulade.

The hands on cooking portion (utilizing elements from the still life) of the class has been a favorite aspect of the class for adults and children alike.  Jeff transforms cooking from being a chore to something fun and joyful.

The shared meal is the finale of the class.  Not only does the food taste amazing, but eating feels different after so much time spent studying, appreciating, arranging, and working with the food.  ”Artful Eating” seems to refer not only to the practice of combining drawing and cooking, but to a transformed way of nourishing our bodies and minds.

Wondering what to do now that your mouth is watering?  Start by making sure you don’t miss Cheff Jeff’s last Artful Eating workshop:

Green School Supplies Help Kids ‘Live Peace’

Encouraging children to have a keen awareness of their own impact on the environment starts with helping them make smart choices about the things they use every day.  Help them get ready for their new grade level by selecting environmentally friendly school supplies.

Image courtesy Dante Beatrix backpacks, definitely worth checking out!

The Center for Health, Environment and Justice has just published their Back-to-School Shopping List of safer choices in over 20 categories (including lunch boxes, binders, backpacks and more).

The Rodale Company recently featured an article in which they gave many suggestions for sources of green school supplies that warrant an “A+.”

Nature Moms has compiled their own great list here.

Even Real Simple has some advice.

Learning to select and use school supplies that are earth friendly is part of learning to ‘live peace.’  Found your own favorite green supplies? – please share!

CLP @ OCMA’s Target 2nd Sunday

We had a great weekend visiting Orange County Museum of Art for their monthly free Target Family Sunday.  We met so many lovely families; it was wonderful to see so many families out together spending their weekend in such a positive way!  Way to live peace!

Below are some of the beautiful living peace activity sheets that children completed this past Sunday.

The Orange County Museum of Art offers weekly classes at the Center for Living Peace.  Every class accommodates all ages (families attending together receive a discount!) and has been developed specifically with the theme of ‘living peace’ in mind.  Check out upcoming classes here, and watch some clips of past classes here!

TKYC’s Around the Clock Community Service

The Team Kids Youth Council is a group of remarkable young people committed to making a positive mark on their world.

Their commitment is evident by the fact that on an early summer morning, these teens were not found sleeping-in late, but busy making hundreds of sandwiches to be delivered to a local homeless shelter.  This in fact, was just the first of several service activities they completed this day, as part of a 12 hour ‘servathon.’  In just that single day, the TKYC also volunteered their energy at Ronald McDonald House, cleaned-up a beach, wrote letters to soldiers and sick children in need of hope, and engaged in many other activities to make good happen.  Learn more about TKYC and the extraordinary teens that make up this group here, or contact Jenny Heenan at jheenan@teamkids.org.

The Center for Living Peace recently had the honor of hosting the Team Kids Youth Council for part of their self-planned 12 hour ‘servathon.’  At CLP they made hundreds of sandwiches and delivered them to a local homeless shelter, and moving on to several other service activities that day.

Thank you Team Kids Youth Council for all that you do for our local community and world.  You inspire us!

Making Peace, One Piece at a Time

Orange County native, Gene Jimenez (aka “GENE”), has embarked on a self titled journey towards peace called “24 Peaces.”  This multimedia art project is a means of exploring the fundamental meaning of peace and of inspiring others to create peace themselves.  Gene is traveling around the world to locate and interview 24 carefully selected peacemakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Chief Arvol Looking Horse, and Millecent ‘Mama’ Hill.

Modeling a creative way for any individual to investigate and make peace, Gene is making 24 paintings based on his 24 conversations.

A mixed-media project, 24 Peaces exists as a traveling documentary film and art exhibition, as an interactive Internet portal, and as a stand-alone video program.  Check out more details and watch their Vimeo video, here!
