Live Peace with Playing for Change

Playing for a Change started out as a small project inspired to bring about peace through music by recording musicians all across the world with a mobile recording studio. The movement grew out of the belief that music has the power to unite people across all boundaries. Over 100 musicians have been recorded by the project. From these connections Playing for Change has created a touring band.  While recording, the project’s film crew was compelled to push the movement further by creating the Playing for Change Foundation to facilitate global music education. It’s mission is to ensure that anyone with the desire to receive a music education would have the opportunity to do so. The Foundation has started a music schools in Ghana,  South Africa, Rwanda, Mali ,and four schools in Nepal. The Foundation holds benefit concerts around the world on Playing for Change Day, September 22nd, to fund it’s music school program.

Peace in Motion Movie Night: Let Freedom Sing!

In honor of Black History month, we will be screening Let Freedom Sing, a documentary about how music inspired the Civil Rights Movement.

This documentary follows the development of the Civil Rights Movement and the music associated with it. The music of the 1960′s Civil Rights Movement inspired and encouraged its listeners, enabling them to stay strong in a time of struggle and turbulent change. The songs gradually transformed from spiritual to freedom songs; serving as a common thread that connected people across the country as they fought for change. The music motivated people in the darkest times and inspired them to persevere with hope and optimism. The effects of this movement are permanent and continue to resonate with a messages of equality and hope. Most of the songs that came out of this movement are widely recognized now– but the context and history of these songs is known only by a few. Let Freedom Sing sheds a light on the story behind these inspirational songs.

Here is a teaser clip from the film:

Some of the songs included in this documentary are “We Shall Overcome,” “A Change is Gonna Come,” “Free at Last,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and “People Get Ready.”

Here is one of the songs that is featured in the film, “I Shall Not Be Moved,” by The Harmonizing Four:

Another song, feautred in the film is Billie Holiday’s song, “Strange Fruit”

It is going to me such an amazing film screening! I cannot wait! To find out more about the film screening, or to sign up for the class, click here.

Playing for Change is a self-described “multimedia movement” that connects people from all over the world in musical projects, inspiring everyone exposed to feel uplifted and united.

The idea for this project arose from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic, spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and unite us as one human race.” – Read more.

Playing for Change records songs and videos via a mobile recording studio, and supports the musicians who participate as well as their communities.   These musicians also tour and play benefit concerts to share their music and their call to be charitable, aware, and collaborative.
