The Meaning of Compassion

“This is 19-year-old Schoep being cradled in his father’s arms last night in Lake Superior. Schoep falls asleep every night when he is carried into the lake. The buoyancy of the water soothes his arthritic bones. Lake Superior is very warm right now, so the temperature of the water is perfect. I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John. By the way, John rescued Shoep as an 8 month old puppy, and he’s been by his side through many adventures.”

Compassion is the understanding or empathy for the suffering of others. That compassion can be given to humans, animals, plants, and all aspects of life. John Unger embodies this beautiful love for his canine companion of 19 years, Schoep. The aging dog’s arthritis makes sleep difficult for the poor pup, so Unger takes Schoep on daily swims to relax his aching doggy joints and soothe him to sleep.
