August Outreach: Refugee Awareness

Every other month, we have outreach displays combining online content with physical displays in our library. Past displays have focused on One Billion Rising, One Day Without Shoes, and our Pawsitively Peaceful series!

This August, the outreach is focused on refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). Both refugees and IDPs face the struggles of trying to build a home in an unfamiliar, and potentially even hostile, environment.

You can help make Good Happen for refugees and IDPs, both locally and globally. Check out the organizations listed below for ways to get involved! While by no means an exhaustive list, these two organizations both work tirelessly to help refugees and IDPs adjust to their new homes, find resources in their community, and get the support they need to rebuild their lives.

The Tiyya Foundation

The Tiyya Foundation

Locally, The Tiyya Foundation provides support for refugee and IDP families in Orange County. Tiyya helps these families find resources available in the community, and also provides programming for the children.

How can you make Good Happen with Tiyya?
  • You can support the work of Tiyya by joining our August Summer Service Day! Every Saturday in August, starting today, we will be collecting school supplies to help the children of refugees be prepared for the upcoming school year.
  • You can also volunteerdonate funds, or donate items to support Tiyya!

UNHCR

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) operates on a global scale to help refugees fleeing from violent or dangerous situations. The current situations in Syria and Mali have resulted in an influx of refugees seeking safety in neighboring countries.

How can you make Good Happen with UNHCR?
  • You can support the work of UNHCR by making monetary donations through USA for UNHCR. Though monetary donations may seem impersonal, financial support allows the needed supplies and resources to get where they need to go.
  • You can also be more aware of the global refugee and IDP situation. By being more aware, you can become an advocate.

How will you get involved this August? Tell us in the comments below!

Good Happens.

Pay it Forward!
