The Tiyya Foundation: Sharing Stories
How does Tiyya help?
Tiyya provides services and activities including art workshops, homework tutoring, and soccer camps. These programs help the children acclimate to their new home and make friends with other kids in the area, plus just have a good time!
Read below to hear from Gloria, a Tiyya volunteer, on the difference that Tiyya is making.
Q: What did you like most about participating in the Crop Walk?
Gloria: I heard about Tiyya and the Crop Hunger Walk through my sister, Helen, who volunteers with their Art Speaks program. I liked reading the facts along the way about hunger and the effect and influence it has around the world. It changed my perspective on life and with that knowledge, my empathy now outweighs my apathy. It also gave me the potential to make a difference by spreading awareness because awareness is the greatest agent for change.
Q: What did you enjoy the most about the Halloween Party with the Tiyya Kids?
Gloria: The kids were so friendly and well behaved, it was hard NOT to love them! I thought pin the hat on the witch was adorable and it was such a simple game, yet it made all the kids so excited and adorable! I loved it!
Q: What advice do you have for other volunteers who are interested in working with Tiyya?
Gloria: I suggest that they talk to the children and get to know them better because once you learn one or two things about them, you become attached and it makes you want to do better and more for them! I learned that Tiyya provides a safe environment that nurtures childrens’ growth and helps them mature. It’s different from other organizations because all the kids I’ve interacted with are from such diverse backgrounds and each one of them is unique and special in their own way, which gives you that much more incentive to learn more about them and their stories.
